The transformation of the landscape is a process that has been keeping my interest. The essence of contemporary landscape is, I believe, change and movement. Recently this transformation has accelerated.

Two different movements of landscape are fundamental in my work;

First, the movement of landscape in a physical, geographical sense. This is the transformation of the (Dutch) landscape by means of human interference. Shifts in the relationship between nature and culture, between past and present. Shifting of purpose and zoning for industry, cities, nature, water. But also transformation by natural processes (sometimes set in motion by man) like floods, desertification, erosion.

Second, the movement of landscape in a social, philosophical sense. The ever changing social ideas, (technological) possibilities and developments that underlie these changes as mentioned above. Philosopher Roger Scruton has a view that appeals to me. In his opinion, modern man, due to his civilisation, has become sort of a nomad. Modern man was set in motion by today’s ease of transportation. Distances have become (relatively) smaller, the ease of transportation between (virtual) spaces has increased, contexts have become more complex, causing a different perception of the landscape.

In my work I use fragments of aerial views to gain a certain distance, in both senses of the word. My ‘landscapes’ are a translation and stacking of various processes in the landscape wich are connected with each other. Various pieces of time and space are mixed up. A composed landscape. This brings in the possibility to create multiple distances and perspectives in one image. Furthermore, the abstracted character does not indicate a specific landscape, but the processes moving within, shifting and pushing it forward, putting it in a different light and giving it a new look.

From different sources, books, digital media, the past and the present, I compose my ‘world view’. I filter the gathered images and adapt the chosen motifs and fragments. Gradually a data bank of images develops, it’s contents returning in various compositions. I put together different shapes and contents as in a collage. This way, the character of a puzzle takes shape, creating the idea of parts sliding and gliding into and over each other. An imagination and representation of a landscape in motion, drifting, on a journey. I believe that current developments in our landscape are both timeless and contemporary. Because we leave our footprint behind. Because landscape reflects man.
